The Best Way to Deal With Failure Fail (Repeatedly)
Imagine you experienced a failure at work. The memory of it plagues you, and you just canââ¬â¢t shake it. You visit a doctor to explain your condition, and sheà administers a shot, prescribing a nap to immediately follow it. You steal away for a quick snooze, and when you wake up the memory is goneââ¬âforever. Sound like a scene out of science fiction? How about one in the not-too-distant future? There is no question that an incident involving failureââ¬âeither small or spectacularââ¬âcan lodge into your memory bank like a heavy stone. But moments of failure (OK, sometimes they feel like decades) can teach us a lot about ourselves, and what to do differently the next time. Thereââ¬â¢s a lot we can learn if we donââ¬â¢t try to stuff failure into a drawer right after it happens, or hide it away in a closet to keep company with the cobwebs and holiday decorations. Resist that temptation to throw it away, because itââ¬â¢s an opportunity to become smarter. But as we all know, it can be hard to embrace failure when itââ¬â¢s staring us in the face. Most of us have been conditioned from a very early age to achieve, to win, and to get all the answers right. To appear wrong is to appear weak, or so weââ¬â¢re told. And that ââ¬Å"painâ⬠youââ¬â¢re feeling? Most likely: bruised pride. Many times itââ¬â¢s this pride that keeps us from leveraging the pearls that lie just below the surface of a perceived failure. Although many of us strive with all our might to avoid failure (a truly impossible feat), we do so at a cost. We may find that our ability to bounce back has atrophied. And just like thereââ¬â¢s no crying in baseball, thereââ¬â¢s also no moping (for too long) in business after experiencing a setbackââ¬âalthough there should be plenty of reflection to let all the lessons bubble up into your conscious memory. To succeed as a professional, you need resiliency just as much as you need traits like ambition, skill, and creativity. Because hereââ¬â¢s something you can always count on: failure is inevitable. And until thereââ¬â¢s a vaccination to ward against it, the best remedy is the ability to roll with lifeââ¬â¢s unavoidable punches. So how about rethinking what failure means? Dyan Williams, in her article ââ¬Å"Change Your Definition of Failure: Itââ¬â¢s How You Get Betterâ⬠has some sage words: ââ¬Å"A failure that results from well-designed and well-intentioned experimentation can be worthy of praise. And regardless of whether failure offers any real value, itââ¬â¢s a common occurrence in our uncertain environment and a natural part of human existence.â⬠If itââ¬â¢s your goal to be a leader of a team, division, or company, you have to have experienced setbacks in order to know how to lead your team through them. Think of the first time you spoke or presented in front of a large group of people. It was probably terrifying. But what happened after the third time, the fifth timeââ¬âthe tenth time? It probably got a bit easier, even if the terror never fully went away. You developed the skills to deal with the unease, alongside the ability to address an audience and keep its attention. In the article ââ¬Å"Why Failure is Good for Leaders,â⬠Dorie Clark quotes author, Annemarie Neal, as saying: ââ¬Å"If you havenââ¬â¢t learned [to fail], when it gets to the big game, youââ¬â¢ll never have the resources to get over the hurdle.â⬠Wrote Clark: ââ¬Å"You need executives with the courage to move forward anyway and be willing to fail faster and smarter.â⬠So before you hold out your hopes that scientists come up with an easily accessible means toinoculate against bad memoriesà that keep you awake at night, keep in mind that those memories can be good reminders of the times you cut corners to get something done, chose not to delegate, or failed to listen. Those memories can serve as reminders to nudge you into make different choicesââ¬âand those just might lead to a rosier path. Also keep this in mind: whenà Akita Morita co-founded Sony, the companyââ¬â¢s introductory product was a rice cookerââ¬âthat consistently burned the rice in it. And thereââ¬â¢sà Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chickenà fame, whose chicken recipe was turned down approximately 1,000 times. He finally met his goal of opening his famous fast food business at the age of 65. And hereââ¬â¢s a final story:à Walt Disney was once firedà because ââ¬Å"he lacked imagination and had no original ideas.â⬠In November of 2012, at the end of its fiscal year, the Walt Disney Companyà reported a record $42.3 million dollars in revenue, up 3% from the previous year. These business pioneers knew failureââ¬âand succeeded despite of it. Maybe even because of it. Photo courtesy ofà StockMonkeys.com. I learned a lot about myself and how I deal with being out of my comfort zone. I learned both soft and hard skills, from how to work in very diverse teams to key accounting metrics and strategy. I was surprised by how weak I was at certain tasks in English or how strong I actually was in other areas. Hult gave me opportunities to try new things and meet people from places I never thought I would have friends. . My internship experiences gave me the chance to broaden my view of different cultures and different companies. I had the opportunity to work and live with people whose values differed from people in my home country. I thought that this would be difficult, but it gave me the chance to reflect on my own values and assess if they were a result of my home country environment or if they were intrinsically mine. . It taught me a lot about how I see people, how people see me, and how conflict can be resolved in a kind and productive way. The best feedback you get, when delivered constructively, is the most critical because it really feeds into how you lead. Iââ¬â¢ve completely reversed my leadership styleââ¬âthe result is so much richer and more powerful when you lead from behind and lead with strength. . Studying in tandem with working, whilst challenging, gave me the perfect platform to directly apply learning concepts into my business environment, the competitive landscape, and the real-estate industry as a whole. When I started the program, I was very happy in my corporate role. But my courage and aspirations grew to the point that I took on a whole new direction. Having my career coach, Joanna, as a sounding board allowed me to really be strategic and get to know myself. She coached me thro ugh all the interviews, the research, and the questions. It went in parallel with what I was doing academically and after six months everything just clicked. . I went into the EMBA knowing I had nothing to lose and Iââ¬â¢ve come out with everything. I knew that Iââ¬â¢d have likely stayed in my neighborhood for years to come if I didnââ¬â¢t take this opportunity. Iââ¬â¢d not lived or studied outside of the U.S. before. So I left my job as a global strategist at an advertising agency and moved halfway around the world. Iââ¬â¢ve come back a more culturally aware, well-versed person. Iââ¬â¢ve realized that everything is a learning experience and an opportunity for growth. Ill definitely carry this mindset with me into the future. Technology and social media allow us to be different people in several places at once. Im excited to see how I can establish myself in whatever city Ill be lucky enough to call home and still maintain deep connections with people all over the world. Iââ¬â¢m inspired by my classmates every day. Hearing some of their life stories and how getting this degree fits into their greater mission has been very humbling. My biggest challenge has been finding the ââ¬Ërightââ¬â¢ path for me. There have been rooms Ive felt like I shouldnt be in, but now Im proud to feel as though I truly belong, wherever I am.â⬠.
